# Keyboard Shortcuts Reference for Celerity Extension

> Complete reference of every keyboard shortcut and navigation key available in the Celerity new tab extension, including command syntax and modal controls.

Celerity is built around the keyboard — every action from opening a site to navigating autocomplete suggestions has a dedicated key or key combination. Use this page as a quick-reference for all shortcuts and navigation keys available across the extension.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Celerity does not intercept keyboard shortcuts when a modal is open or when
> the cursor is in an input field — your typing always goes where you expect.

## Opening Search

Press any character key while on a new tab with no modal open to activate the search bar instantly. Your keystroke lands directly in the input, so you can start typing your query without a separate focus step.

| Action | Key |
| - | - |
| Open search bar | Any character key (while on a new tab, no modal open) |
| Close search bar | `Escape` |

## Navigating Suggestions

Once the search bar is open and suggestions appear, use the keys below to move focus between the text input and the suggestion list. Pressing a navigation key past the first or last suggestion wraps focus back to the input.

**From the text input:**

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Move to next suggestion | `↓`, `Tab`, `Ctrl`+`N` |
| Move to previous suggestion | `↑`, `Shift`+`Tab`, `Ctrl`+`P` |

**From a focused suggestion:**

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Move to next suggestion | `↓`, `→`, `Tab`, `Ctrl`+`N` |
| Move to previous suggestion | `↑`, `←`, `Shift`+`Tab`, `Ctrl`+`P` |
| Select suggestion | `Enter` |
| Return to input | Navigate past first or last suggestion |

> [!NOTE]
>
> `→` and `←` only cycle through suggestions when a suggestion item already
> has focus. They have no effect on suggestion navigation while the cursor is
> in the text input.

## Quick Actions

These shortcuts work at the page level and do not require the search bar to be open first.

| Action | Keys |
| - | - |
| Open shortcut settings | `Alt`+`+` (plus, equals, or numpad `+`) |
| Submit search / navigate | `Enter` |

## Modal Controls

Close any modal — settings, help, or feedback — with the keys below. These shortcuts are handled independently by each modal, so they always work regardless of which modal is currently open.

| Action | Key |
| - | - |
| Close any modal | `Escape` |
| Close modal (outside click) | Click outside the modal panel |

## Command Syntax Reference

Celerity resolves your input through a priority chain every time you press `Enter`. Understanding this order lets you predict exactly where you will land.

| Pattern | Effect | Example |
| - | - | - |
| `<key>` | Open site directly | `g` → Gmail |
| `<key> <query>` | Search within site | `y cats` → YouTube search for "cats" |
| `<url>` | Navigate to URL | `github.com` → opens GitHub |
| `<anything else>` | Google search | `rust lang docs` → Google |

> [!TIP]
>
> A space is the delimiter between a shortcut key and a search query. Typing
> `y` alone opens YouTube; typing `y lofi` searches YouTube for "lofi".
> Built-in shortcuts including Gmail (`g`), YouTube (`y`), and GitHub (`gh`)
> all support site search out of the box.
