# Export, Import, and Reset Your Celerity Configuration

> Back up your Celerity shortcuts and theme as a portable JSON file, restore a previous backup on any device, or reset to factory defaults.

Celerity stores your shortcuts and theme choice locally in your browser, but you can export them as a plain JSON file at any time. That file is a complete snapshot — you can import it later to restore your setup, carry it to another device, or share it with someone else.

## Configuration file format

An exported config is a single JSON object with two top-level keys: `theme` and `commands`.

```json celerity-config-2024-01-15.json theme={null}
{
  "theme": "dark",
  "commands": {
    "g": {
      "name": "Gmail",
      "url": "https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox",
      "searchTemplate": "/mail/u/0/#search/{}"
    },
    "tw": {
      "name": "Tailwind CSS",
      "url": "https://tailwindcss.com"
    }
  }
}
```

| Field | Description |
| - | - |
| `theme` | One of `system`, `dark`, `light`, or `void`. |
| `commands` | Object where each key is the shortcut key. |

Each entry inside `commands` supports the following properties:

| Property | Type | Required | Description |
| - | - | - | - |
| `name` | string | ✓ | Display name shown in the shortcut grid. |
| `url` | string | ✓ | Destination URL opened when you press the shortcut. |
| `searchTemplate` | string | — | Relative path with a `{}` placeholder for the encoded query (e.g. `/search?q={}`). When present, typing `<key> <query>` searches that site directly. |

## Exporting your config

Export saves a snapshot of your current theme and all shortcuts as a dated JSON file.

**1. Open Settings**

Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of any new tab page, or press <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>+</kbd>.

**2. Scroll to the Config section**

The **Config** section is at the bottom of the Settings panel, below the theme picker.

**3. Click Export Config**

Click the **Export Config** button. Your browser downloads the file automatically — no save dialog appears.

**4. Locate your file**

The file is saved to your default downloads folder and named `celerity-config-YYYY-MM-DD.json` using today's date (e.g. `celerity-config-2024-01-15.json`).

## Importing a config

Import reads a previously exported `.json` file and replaces your current shortcuts and theme with the contents of that file.

**1. Open Settings**

Click the gear icon or press <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>+</kbd>.

**2. Click Import Config**

Click the **Import Config** button. Your browser's file picker opens — only `.json` files are accepted.

**3. Select your backup file**

Navigate to your saved `celerity-config-YYYY-MM-DD.json` file and open it.

**4. Confirm the import**

A confirmation dialog warns that your current configuration will be replaced. Click **Import** to proceed, or **Cancel** to abort without making any changes.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Importing overwrites your current configuration entirely. Export your existing shortcuts first if you want to keep a backup before loading a different file.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Celerity automatically upgrades legacy config files. The old theme name `dark-abyss` is silently mapped to `void`, so backups from earlier versions import correctly.

## Resetting to defaults

Reset replaces everything — your shortcuts and your theme — with Celerity's factory defaults. Use this when you want a clean slate.

**1. Open Settings**

Click the gear icon or press <kbd>Alt</kbd> + <kbd>+</kbd>.

**2. Click Reset to Default**

Click the **Reset to Default** button in the Config section.

**3. Confirm the reset**

A confirmation dialog asks you to verify. Click **Reset** to proceed, or **Cancel** to keep your current setup.

**4. Review the restored defaults**

All custom shortcuts are removed and the 12 built-in shortcuts (Gmail, YouTube, Netflix, and so on) are restored. The theme resets to **System preference**, which follows your operating system's light or dark mode setting.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Reset cannot be undone. Export your config before resetting if you want to preserve your current shortcuts.
